Gold Open Access for journal articles
Gold OA is available for all original research articles by paying an Article Processing Charge (APC). Gold OA articles are free for everyone to download and read.
Authors can only opt-in to gold OA after their article has been accepted; this ensures that OA funding has no influence on the publishing decision. In order for the article to be OA on release, the APC must be paid in full before publication.
If a funder pays an APC and OA for the article is subsequently funded through another route (for example, a successful Subscribe to Open campaign), we’ll refund the APC.
Article Processing Charges
Gold Open Access for published articles
If your article was published more than 18 months ago and you would like to flip it to gold OA, we offer a discount on the APC.
If your article was published less than 18 months ago, the full APC applies.
What does the Article Processing Charge cover?
The APC contributes to publication costs including:
- Copy-editing
- Typesetting
- XML mark-up
- Perpetual online hosting
- Supply to abstracting and indexing services
- Permanent archiving of the published article
- The editorial, production and marketing infrastructure that supports the journal
The APC does not contribute towards print costs for the journal issue. Currently, it does not subsidise subscription prices due to low take-up; we’ll review this annually and update our policy if we start to see significant numbers of gold OA articles.
Offset arrangement
Funders can claim a free one-year subscription to the journal the gold OA article will be published in (if you have self-funded, you can claim an individual subscription). To claim, email journals@eup.ed.ac.uk.
