Mission

Connecting people and ideas to inspire creative thinking, open new perspectives and shape the world we live in

Our ambition is to create a community of authors, editors, advisors and practitioners committed to publishing world-class academic research that amplifies the critical role of the humanities and social sciences in shaping the way we think about and tackle global and local issues. Sharing our University Press knowledge and expertise, we will nurture every project from idea to publication and beyond, to maximise its influence and impact. We will work with academics from across diverse backgrounds, and from early and mid-career researchers to professors, to give voice to a wide range of international perspectives. And we will build partnerships to create and deepen connections with our parent institution, the University of Edinburgh, and with wider civic society.

Purpose

• We support the global community of authors, readers, librarians and our university by publishing progressive academic research in our chosen subject areas.
• We share expert voices that stimulate ideas to drive change.
• Our publications grapple with difficult concepts, having the potential to open minds to new ways of thinking.
• Our commitment to equity, diversity, inclusivity and accessibility in our workplace, in who we work with and in what we publish offers a voice and opportunities to those who are under-represented.
• We are committed to embedding sustainable practices across all areas of our business and contributing to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
• We understand our authors’ and editors’ needs and provide support through the publication process, developing each project to maximise its impact.
• Our multidisciplinary committee of University of Edinburgh academics engage with every project, adding value to ensure they reach the broadest audience.
• We are proud to be part of Scotland’s vibrant intellectual and cultural scene, and reflect this in our charitable purpose of advancing education, the arts, heritage and culture.
• We will embed digital at the heart of all our activities: to enhance the reach of our content, better understand the impact of our authors’ research, create efficient systems and improve accessibility.
